Apple Rumored To Set iPhone Launch Event For Sept. 12

Apple is widely expected to debut the iPhone 5 – and a smaller version of the iPad – sometime this fall. And now we have a potential date for the launch event.

The blog iMore is reporting that the company will hold a launch event for both devices on Wednesday, September 12, with the new phone to ship on Friday, September 21. The report is attributed to “sources who have proven accurate in the past.”

Also to be launched on the same date, according to the report, will be a new version of the iPod nano. The post says the release date for what everyone has been calling the iPad mini also could be September 21. The report speculates that a new iPod Touch could debut at the same event.

As the post notes, the iPhone 4S was launched on October 4, 2011, and released 10 days later. The iPad 3 was announced on Wednesday, March 7, and launched 9 days later.

Given the typically robust early sales for Apple products,  a September launch date for the new iPhone could mean a big boost for the company’s September quarter financial report; the Street consensus has been that the launch would in October, rather than September.

Apple is up $11.55, lub 2%, to $596.71.

Rumor has combined iPhone 5/iPad mini event September 12th

Would signal return to old timetable

Apple is planning to announce the next-generation iPhone and a smaller iPad model at an event on September 12th, according to iMore sources. The new iPhone is then expected to launch on September 21st, but no release date has been mentioned for the new iPad. The latter is also true for a new iPod nano, which is also expected to premiere at the September 12th presentation.

A September launch would be earlier than has often been rumored, but would allow Apple to return to its usual fall product schedule. The company typically holds an iPod/iTunes-related event in early September, shipping new products roughly around the same time. In 2011, though, Apple decided to move that event to October, also incorporating the iPhone, which had previously only seen major updates in June or July.

There is no word from the iMore sources on a new iPod touch, although it is predicted that Apple will make some sort of upgrade. Last year the company made virtually no changes to the Touch beyond adding a white option. This year it may have to head in a new direction, since a smaller iPad could prove too close in terms of price and features.

Apple to introduce iPhone 5, iPad Mini in September

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is planning to debut the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini at a special event on Sept. 12, according to a U.S. media report.

Apple will unveil the six-generation iPhone at the event, with the release date to follow nine days later on Sept. 21, according to technology blog site iMore. It noted that the information comes from sources who have proven accurate in the past.

The report said the iPad Mini will also be announced at the event, along with a new iPod nano and iPod touch. But iMore said they haven’t heard a release date of the iPad Mini.

Long rumored to debut the new iPhone in October, Apple is recently reported to be ready to go as early as September. Last week, French website App4Phone.fr said the release date will be Sept. 21, citing sources from manufacturers in China.

Some analysts said a September release date for the new iPhone would work financially for Apple, helping the company end the calendar third quarter on a high note with a possible heavy demand for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

For the calendar third quarter in 2011, Apple missed sales expectations for the first time in five years as consumers postponed purchases in anticipation of the iPhone 4S in October.

iPhone 5 unveiling reportedly set for Sept. 12

Apple‘z iPhone 5 is due to be unveiled on Sept. 12, according to posts on three separate news or rumor websites. The new phone will be released before the end of the month, they say.

The latest iPhone rumors are being accompanied with a flurry of others: that Apple also will announce at or near the same time a new smaller version of the iPad (the so-callediPad mini”) as well as the iPad 4, a new iPod nano, and a new iPod touch.

iMore’s Rene Ritchie, citing anonymoussources who have proven accurate in the past,” says Apple will hold a special event on Sept. 12 to unveil the next iPhone, which will be released nine days later on Friday, Sept. 21.

Ritchie’s sources don’t seem to have any new details on the phone’s features. He repeats what could be called the iOSphere’s Rumor Consensus: it will have a 4-inch, 16:9 screen, based on what’s calledin-cell displaytechnology (creating a thinner screen assembly), a smaller dock connector, and a smaller SIM card. Together, theseshould leave lots of room for the LTE radio we learned about earlier in the year, and the bigger battery to go along with it,” he says.

Two other sites, The Wall Street Journal’s AllThingsD blog i The Verge, also cited sources saying Apple will hold aneventthe week of Sept. 9, but couldn’t say it will be for the new iPhone.

John Paczkowski, at AllThingsD, posted thatSources tell AllThingsD that Apple is currently planning an event for the week of September 9th, with Wednesday being the date on which it will likely be held. And while we haven’t yet confirmed the event’s focus, history suggests it will indeed be the new iPhone.

Our own sources familiar with the matter have confirmed that date,” posted Dante D’Orazio, at The Verge. “It’s still not certain what will be announced at the event, but it seems very likely that it will be the next-generation iPhone.

As evidence for abig fall product cyclefrom Apple, Paczkowski saysyou need only look at the recent spike in the company’s prepayment for inventory components.

According to Apple’s latest 10-Q filing, prepayment for inventory components rose $1.15 billion sequentially in the June quarter,” Paczkowski writes. “That’s a big increase, one that puts such prepayments at their highest level in four years — 12.6% of Apple’s total sales, according to Wells Fargo Securities analyst Maynard Um. And as Um notes, they’re a good indicator that Apple is ramping up for a big product launchor several of them.

There’s a big difference between a big product launch and several product launches. In the case of iPhone and iPad, Apple is making them available in new, and big, markets, notably China. Just to have more iPhone 5 handsets available for sale will require expandedinventory componentsand production capability, for which Apple plans to spend around $8 billion this year.

The Loop’s experienced Apple watcher, Jim Dalrymple had a typically laconic comment on the rumored Sept. 12 iPhone event: “Yep.”

Apparently based on the same sources, iMore’s Ritchie also claims Apple will announce the iPad mini, whichwill be exactly like the 9.7-inch iPad, only scaled down to 7.x-inches,” and a new iPod nano.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 7.7 banned across Europe, but does that apply in the UK?

Apple has won an EU-wide preliminary injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet, after a German court decided the device infringes on Apple’s design rights.

The ruling came down from the Düsseldorf regional court on Tuesday morning, according to the Dutch site Webwereld. Jednak, the court also upheld an earlier decision stating that the Galaxy Tab 10.1N — itself a revised model that Samsung created to work around design infringements — did not copy Apple’s designs.

Samsung is disappointed with the court’s ruling,” the Korean manufacturer said in a statement. “We will continue to take all available measures, including legal action, to protect our intellectual property rights and defend against Apple’s claims to ensure our products remain available to consumers throughout the European Union.

In Europe, design patents, or so-calledcommunity designs’, can be enforced on an EU-wide basis. This is the case with the Galaxy Tab 7.7: if Apple chooses to enforce the ban, it should theoretically come into force everywhere in Europe.

The only place it does not apply is Germany itself, but only because Apple has already won a ban on the device there, on competition-law grounds.

Jednak, the situation in the UK is far from clear-cut. Just last week, High Court judge Colin Birss ordered Apple to put a notice on its site stating that Samsung’s tablets do not copy its iPad designs. Earlier this month, the same judge said Samsung’s were not copies of Apple’s tablet, partly because they werenot as cool“.

It remains to be seen whether the EU-wide ban or UK-specific court decision takes precedence here. ZDNet has asked a few patent lawyers for their opinion, but is yet to get a definitive answer.

Both the UK and German cases deal with alleged infringement of a tablet design that Apple registered in 2004, well before the iPad or even the iPhone came out.

[NOTE: An earlier version of this story missed the fact that the 2004 designs were examined in the UK case, whereas they were of course central to the case. Duly corrected.]

Evidence of 12 September iPhone 5, iPad mini event floods in

Yesterday, a report emerged claiming that Apple is planning to unveil its next iPhone at a special event on 12 Wrzesień, alongside the iPad mini and new iPod nano. The claims have now been confirmed by several publications and their sources, including The Verge, The New York Times, Reuters, Bloomberg and AllThingsD.

The original report came from iMore, which claimed that “sources who have proven accurate in the past,” have said that the iPhone 5 will be unveiled by Apple on 12 Wrzesień, alongside the iPad mini, and will be available to buy on 21 Wrzesień, although the smaller iPad’s release date was unknown.

Following iMore’s report, iLounge revealed further information from “a highly reliable source,” who confirmed the mid-September launch of the iPhone, and added that Apple is working on at least two cases for the new iPhone. One of those cases is believed to be similar to the iPhone 4’s Bumper, but the other is a different design that could “have a major impact on the accessory market if released.”

iLounge also said that a new iPod touch is likely to be launched at the same 12 September event, and will have a bigger display. The report does, however, dismiss the launch of a new iPod nano at the event.

As for Apple’s tablet range, iLounge’s source says that the iPad mini will not be ready to ship alongside the new iPhone, and could have its own launch event, possibly in November. The iPad mini could have its own Smart Cover and Smart Case too, says the source.

This November event could also see the introduction of the fourth generation of 10in iPad, says iLounge, which will have minor tweaks such as the addition of a rear microphone to improve sound quality of video recordings, and the dock connector will be smaller like the one predicted for the next iPhone.

If that’s not enough, AllThingsD has also confirmed the 12 September event. “Apple hasn’t yet officially announced the fall event at which it is expected to debut the next iteration of the iPhone, but it’s definitely planning one,” says the report.

AllThingsD points to Apple’s latest 10-Q filing, which reveals that the company’s prepayment for inventory components has risen substantially during the June quarter of 2012, indicating that Apple is preparing for a big product launch.

“Historically, such increases have been followed by a slid ramp-up in revenue in the following 2-3 quarters,” said Wells Fargo Securities analyst Maynard Um said in a note to clients on Monday. “In our view, and increase in inventory component prepayment may suggest that Apple is securing supply for potential new product launches.”

The Verge cites its own sources familiar with the matter as confirming the 12 September event, as does The New York Times, Reuters, i Bloomberg.

The Loop’s Jim Dairymple simply wrote: “Yep,” in response to iMore’s original report.

Earlier this week, photos of a fully assembled iPhone 5 were leaked, showing the most detailed insight into Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone yet.

There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy an iPhone Accessory [Iphone 5]

There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy an iPhone Accessory Whatever you do in the next six weeks, don’t spend any money on iPhone accessories. No matter how enticing the sales are, no matter how frayed your case is. There are significant changes coming to Apple’s marquee handset—and soon—that will render them nearly obsolete.

Over the past several update cycles, Apple owners have been lulled into a false sense of security. 3G stuff worked for 3GS. 4 worked for 4S. Aside from a change in case design, it’s tempting to assume that these iPhone side dishes are blessed with ageless compatibility. The reality is they’re six weeks away from being worthless..

Docks

That’s right. The new iPhone’s most drastic change is expected to be its dock connector shrinking down to a 19-pin port from 30 pins. (Ugh). As 9to5 Mac points out, you’re about to see a ton of 30-pin dock connector fire sales. But don’t be fooled! Typically spendy docks are all going to be offered on the cheap, but next month none of this stuff will work with your shiny new iPhone and its skinnier port.

Even if you don’t plan on picking up a new iPhone this fall, it’s important to think long term. If and when Apple goes to a smaller port, it’s never going back. So unless you either buy docks with shocking frequency or don’t plan on ever updating your phone again, you should hold off.

That is, unless you’re okay with buying a crappy 30-pin to 19-pin adapter that you’ll end up losing in a month.

Cases

While we’re at it, it’s wise to avoid buying iPhone cases, zbyt. While we don’t know exactly what the new iPhone is going to look, but it’s almost certainly going to be a different size and shape. If you literally just bought an iPhone 4 or 4S and plan to hold onto it for a couple of years, sure, knock yourself out. But if you have any interest in upgrading ever, stand down.

Waiting is hard, but hold off for the next month and a half or so, because right now you’d just be burning money on something disguised as a deal.

Everything else

If you’re exercising restraint, it’s best to just wait on buying anything for your iPhone, period. Cables, chargers, adapters, itp..—these things aren’t going to work with Apple’s next-gen smartphone. And though the price might be right, ignore, ignore, ignore. Your future self will thank you.
